Where to Live in Gwanak, Seoul: A Neighborhood Guide for Foreign Students

"Gwanak" on a Seoul housing search usually means more than one neighborhood. It covers Gwanak-gu, home to Seoul National University (SNU), plus the neighboring streets of Dongjak-gu around Soongsil University and Chung-Ang University. Rents are lower than in central Seoul, Lines 2, 7 and 9 reach Gangnam in about 15-25 minutes, and the right pick depends mostly on your school, your budget and how loud you want your street to be. This guide compares the main areas side by side so you can choose one before you start searching.

What Does "Gwanak" Cover?

Gwanak-gu sits in the southwestern part of Seoul, with Gwanaksan Mountain covering a large share of the district. SNU's four nearby areas (SNU Station, Nakseongdae, Sillim and Venture Town) are here. Soongsil and Chung-Ang are just across the border in Dongjak-gu, and their students often live on the same Line 7 corridor, so Checkmate Korea groups all three under one Gwanak search.

Quick Answer: Which Area Fits You?

Pick by what matters most to you, then read the matching section below.

  • Lowest rent: Sillim, around ₩400,000-500,000 for a one-room. The trade-off is a longer bus to SNU and noisy streets near Exits 3-4.
  • Best transport and easiest first base: SNU Station. The highest rent of the SNU-area options, but the most amenities and direct airport buses.
  • Quiet but still on Line 2: Nakseongdae, one stop from SNU Station, a step cheaper.
  • Closest to the SNU main entrance: SNU Venture Town, about a 19-minute walk, very quiet, hilly, mostly older buildings.
  • Soongsil students: the Soongsil University Station area or Sangdo. Line 7 goes direct to Gangnam in about 15 minutes.
  • Chung-Ang students: Heukseok (Line 9, next to the main gate, but steep) or Sangdo (quieter, village bus to campus).

How to Decide in Three Questions

1. What is your monthly limit?

Under ₩500,000: look at Sillim and Venture Town first. Around ₩550,000: Sangdo and the Soongsil Station area. ₩600,000 or more: SNU Station and Nakseongdae open up. Check the deposit column too, because Venture Town has the lowest deposits in our guides.

2. Which campus are you going to, and how will you get there?

Almost none of these areas is a comfortable walk to a campus gate. SNU is a large, hilly campus where every area needs a bus or shuttle, and Soongsil and Chung-Ang are hilly too. Before you book, check the route from the actual room to your actual building, not just the nearest station.

3. How do you want your evenings to feel?

For food and people nearby, choose SNU Station, Sillim or the Soongsil Station area. For quiet, choose Nakseongdae, Venture Town or Sangdo. If you can, look at the street at night, or ask the agent which exit the room is near.
