Hongdae & Hapjeong: Neighborhood Guide for Foreign Students in Seoul
Hongdae (홍대) and Hapjeong (합정) make up one of the most vibrant and internationally known areas in Seoul.
Famous for its indie music scene, street art, and creative culture, Hongdae is popular not just with students but with young foreign residents who want to be at the center of Seoul's social life.
This guide covers where Hongdae is, how to navigate the area, what living here is actually like, and what to expect on rent.
Where Is Hongdae? Which Exit Should I Use?
Hongdae (홍익대학교 앞, often shortened to 홍대) is the neighborhood around Hongik University in Mapo-gu, western Seoul. The main station is Hongik University Station (홍대입구역), served by Line 2, Line 6, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and the AREX Airport Railroad — making it one of the best-connected stations in the city.
Hongik University Station Exits Guide

- Exit 1 — Toward Hongdae main street (홍대 메인 거리), clubs, bars, street performance area. Most tourist-facing exit.
- Exit 2 / 3 — Toward residential streets, cafes, and quieter back alleys. Good for students living in the area.
- Exit 6 — Toward Hapjeong direction, Han River, quieter residential pocket.
- Exit 9 — AREX Airport Railroad entrance. Use this for Incheon Airport.
💡 If you're arriving from the airport, Exit 9 connects directly to the AREX platform. Incheon Airport to Hongik University Station takes about 45–55 minutes — one of the fastest airport connections from any residential area in Seoul.

Food, Cafes & Nightlife
Hongdae is probably the best area in Seoul for variety in food and nightlife. The streets around the main exit are lined with everything from cheap Korean street food and ramen spots to international restaurants, craft beer bars, and live music venues. The independent cafe scene is particularly strong — Hongdae was one of the first areas in Seoul to develop a specialty coffee culture. Hapjeong has a more curated, lower-key version of the same — independent roasters, brunch spots, and creative studio-cafes that draw a more local crowd.
Goshiwon Near Hongdae
Goshiwons in the Hongdae and Hapjeong area do exist, though they're less common than in areas like Sillim or Anam. Expect to pay slightly more than in those areas — roughly ₩400,000–₩600,000/month — given the neighborhood's premium location. They're typically found in quieter residential alleys a few minutes' walk from the main station exits.
Han River Access
Hapjeong is particularly well-placed for Han River access — Yanghwa-ro leads directly to the riverside parks, popular for cycling, picnics, and outdoor events. A short walk or bike ride from Hapjeong Station gets you to the water.

Hongdae and Hapjeong aren't traditional student areas in the same way as Sinchon or Anam — but for foreign residents who want to live somewhere vibrant, internationally connected, and with the best airport access in Seoul, it's a genuinely compelling option. Hapjeong in particular hits a good balance: quieter than Hongdae, close to the Han River, and still just one stop from everything.
