Sungkyunkwan University Dormitory — What You Need to Know
Seoul Campus: No On-Campus Dorm for SLI Students
This is one of the most important things to know before applying to SKKU's Seoul campus language program: there is no on-campus dormitory for SLI students at the Hyehwa (Seoul) campus. The area around the Seoul campus is a cultural heritage zone with strict development restrictions, meaning large student dorm facilities simply don't exist near campus.
Suwon Campus: Bongryonghaksa Dormitory (봉룡학사)
For SLI students who are willing to commute, SKKU offers dormitory accommodation at the Bongryonghaksa Dormitory on the Suwon Natural Sciences campus. Rooms are 6-person, 3-room units with shared living room and 2 bathrooms.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Structure | 6-person, 3-room unit (2 bathrooms, shared living room) |
| Fee | ₩1,200,000 / semester |
| Facilities | Elevator, laundry room, paid fitness center, seminar rooms, convenience store |
| Eligibility | New SLI students only |
| Application | First-come, first-served; one semester at a time, extendable once |

⚠️ The Suwon campus dorm means commuting to the Seoul campus for classes — Suwon to Hyehwa takes approximately 60–90 minutes each way by subway. Most SLI students choose to find off-campus housing near the Seoul campus instead.
SKKU's Official Housing Partner for the Seoul Campus : CheckmateKorea
For the Seoul campus, SKKU SLI's official accommodation page lists CheckmateKorea (House Buddy Inc.) as the university's sole recommended housing partner — helping newly admitted SLI students find accommodation near the Hyehwa campus.
SKKU Off-Campus Housing: Where Students Actually Live
Because the area immediately around the Hyehwa campus has very limited housing supply (older buildings, heritage zone restrictions, few new developments), most SKKU students don't live right next to campus. Instead, they spread along the Line 4 corridor in Seongbuk-gu — taking the subway to Hyehwa and then the campus shuttle or Jongno 07 bus.
💡 One important thing to know before signing any lease near SKKU: many properties in this area are older and landlords often require 2-year contracts. Short-term leases are harder to find here than in most other Seoul university areas. Factor this into your search.
Getting to Campus from the Seongbuk-gu Areas
From most Line 4 stations in Seongbuk-gu, the commute to SKKU's Seoul campus works like this:
- By subway + shuttle: Take Line 4 to Hyehwa Station (Exit 1) → SKKU shuttle bus to campus
- By bus: From Samseon Bridge or Donam Intersection → transfer to Jongno 07 bus at Hyehwa-dong Rotary → campus
- Journey time: 15–30 min from most Seongbuk-gu stations depending on where you live
SKKU Student Housing Cost — By Area
Hansung University Station (한성대입구역, Line 4) — Closest to SKKU

The closest residential area to SKKU's Seoul campus on Line 4. The station area has a calm, residential atmosphere with the Seongbuk Stream (성북천) nearby for walks. Exits 5 and 6 lead toward Seongbuk-dong — a quieter, cleaner pocket — but rents there are noticeably higher.
| Room type | Monthly rent | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| One-room (원룸) | ₩500,000 – ₩600,000 | ₩5–30 mil |
Sungshin Women's University Station (성신여대입구역, Line 4)

One stop further from SKKU but very popular with students. The area between the station and Sungshin Women's University has a dense concentration of clean one-room apartments, with good security infrastructure (CCTV, regular police patrols, Seongbuk Police Station nearby). About 70% student, 30% working professional resident mix.
| Room type | Monthly rent | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| One-room (원룸) | ₩500,000 – ₩600,000 | ₩3–20 mil |
Further Along Line 4 — Budget Options
Students who prioritize rent over commute time sometimes extend their search further along Line 4 toward Gireum (길음역), Mia Sageori (미아사거리역), or even Dongdaemun (동대문역). These areas offer lower rents and better building stock, with a manageable subway commute back to Hyehwa for class.
| Area | Monthly rent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gireum (길음역, Line 4) | ₩400,000 – ₩600,000 | Newer buildings available, good amenities |
| Mia Sageori (미아사거리역, Line 4) | ₩350,000 – ₩550,000 | Cheapest on this list |
| Dongdaemun (동대문역, Lines 1/4) | ₩450,000 – ₩650,000 | More urban, more options |
What Types of Housing Will You Find Near SKKU?
- One-room Studio (원룸) — The main option in the Hansung and Sungshin areas. Generally older buildings with limited renovation.
- Officetel (오피스텔) — Very limited near the Seoul campus. More available further out at Gireum or Mia Sageori.
- Goshiwon (고시원) — Available in some pockets, more common near Dongdaemun.

The area around SKKU's Seoul campus is genuinely beautiful — close to Bukhansan, Seongbuk-dong, and the historic centre of Seoul — but it requires accepting older housing stock and a Line 4 commute rather than a walk to class. For students who make that trade-off, Seongbuk-gu is a quiet, safe, and characterful part of Seoul to live in.
