Dongguk University Housing, Dorms & Korean Language Program: A Guide for Foreign Students
Dongguk University sits in Jung-gu, on the slope of Namsan — closer to the actual center of Seoul than almost any other university campus in the city. Myeongdong is one subway stop away. That location shapes everything about housing here: the buildings are older, rent runs higher than in outlying university districts, and the campus itself is built on a hill steep enough to matter when you're choosing which side of it to live on.
This guide covers Dongguk's Korean Language Program fees, the Namsan Hall dormitory, and where students actually live around campus.
Dongguk University Map & Campus Address
📍Seoul Campus Address: 30 Pildong-ro 1-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 중구 필동로 1길 30)
The campus is served by two subway stations on opposite sides. Dongguk University Station (동대입구역, Line 3), Exit 6 is the main gate approach. Chungmuro Station (충무로역, Lines 3 and 4), Exit 1 reaches the campus from the other side.
The two entrances matter more than they would elsewhere. The campus is on Namsan and the elevation change between buildings is significant — the Dongdaeipgu side has escalators and building elevators that let you avoid most of the climb, while the Chungmuro side approach is a genuine uphill walk. Which station you use depends on which buildings your classes are in.

💡 Important for D-4 visa applicants: the Certificate of Admission (표준입학허가서) required for a D-4 visa is only issued if you register for two or more semesters at once. If you register for a single semester, you won't receive the document — so a single-semester registration only works if you already hold a valid visa or can stay visa-free. Budget ₩3,540,000 for the two-semester tuition if you need the D-4.
Only students who have paid the application fee will have their documents reviewed. Submit to klc@dongguk.edu, or by post to Hyehwa Hall Room 501.
Degree Programs (학부 / 대학원)
Dongguk is a private university founded in 1906 with particularly well-known programs in film, theater, and Buddhist studies. Undergraduate and graduate tuition varies by department — check the university website for current figures.
Dongguk University Dormitory — Namsan Hall (남산학사)
Dorm Overview
Dongguk's dormitory is Namsan Hall (남산학사), on the Chungmuro side of campus. It's on the Namsan slope, with the amenities you'd expect from a full dorm operation: student cafeteria, food court, coffee shop, convenience store, laundry room, gym, study zone, and a parcel room.
Rooms are 2-person only — there are no single rooms.
Dongguk University Dorm Fee
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Room type | 2-person room (2인 1실), no single rooms available |
| Fee | Approx. ₩1,180,000 / 3 months (2026 basis) |
Exact amounts are posted in the Institute's notices each term — the figure above is the published approximate.
Dongguk University Dorm Application Dates (2026)
Unlike many university dorms, Dongguk publishes its language-program dorm calendar a full year ahead. The application windows close roughly six weeks before move-in, so this is worth marking early.
| Semester | Move-in period | Application period | Results announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring 2026 | Mar 16 – May 29 | Jan 22 – Jan 29 | Feb 6 |
| Summer 2026 | Jun 15 – Aug 28 | May 1 – May 7 | May 14 |
| Fall 2026 | Sep 14 – Nov 26 | Jul 31 – Aug 7 | Aug 14 |
| Winter 2026 | Dec 14 – Feb 26, 2027 | Oct 30 – Nov 6 | Nov 13 |

⚠️ Application details are posted to the Institute's notice board roughly three weeks before each window opens, and the schedule can shift. Check before you plan around these dates.
💡 The application window is short — about one week — and closes well before the semester starts. If you're arriving for Spring, the dorm decision happens in January, while you're still abroad. Missing it means finding off-campus housing from overseas, which is a different and harder problem. Decide early.
Dongguk University Off-Campus Housing
Housing right next to campus in Jangchung-dong (장충동) exists but is limited, and most of the buildings are old. What Dongguk students actually do is live one or two stops away, where there's more inventory and better value.
The three realistic areas: Dongdaeipgu (동대입구) for pure convenience, Yaksu (약수) for the best balance, and Chungmuro (충무로) for city life. All are on Line 3, all are within a couple of minutes of campus by subway.
The thing to understand about this area generally: because it's central Seoul, rent runs higher and buildings run older than around most Seoul universities. You're paying for location, and the location is genuinely excellent. But if you came expecting the price-to-quality ratio of an outer university district, adjust your expectations before you start viewing.
Dongguk University Student Housing Cost — By Area
ℹ️ The figures below are indicative ranges based on Checkmate Korea's own listing data. Actual prices move with the season and the individual building — treat these as a planning baseline, not a quote.
Dongguk Univ. (동대입구) Station — At the Main Gate

Dongguk University Station Exit 6 puts you at the main gate. You can walk to a lecture in under five minutes, with no transfer to anywhere.
| Room type | Monthly rent | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| One-room (원룸) | ₩600,000 – ₩750,000 | ₩10–20 mil (range ₩5–30 mil) |
This area is best understood as a commuting base rather than a long-term residential zone — students who prioritize convenience over space, and who don't mind paying for it.
Yaksu (약수) Station— The Balanced Option

Yaksu is on Lines 3 and 6, one stop from campus on Line 3, or a roughly 15-minute uphill walk from Exit 7.
| Room type | Monthly rent | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| One-room (원룸) | ₩550,000 – ₩650,000 | ₩10 mil (range ₩5–20 mil) |
For most Dongguk students, this is the sensible default — noticeably cheaper than Dongdaeipgu, still one stop away, and a better everyday neighborhood than either alternative.
Chungmuro (충무로) Station— Urban and Lively

Chungmuro is on Lines 3 and 4, one stop from campus, or about a 20-minute walk. It's Seoul's traditional film district and it feels like it.
| Room type | Monthly rent | Deposit |
|---|---|---|
| One-room (원룸) | ₩550,000 – ₩700,000 | ₩10 mil (range ₩5–20 mil) |
What Types of Housing Will You Find?
- One-room (원룸) — The default for foreign students around Dongguk. Available across all three areas.
- Villa / Multi-family housing (빌라/다가구) — Common in Jangchung-dong and Pil-dong. Older stock; check condition carefully.
- Officetel (오피스텔) — Limited near campus, a few newer buildings around Dongdaeipgu and Chungmuro. Higher deposits.
- Goshiwon (고시원) — Available around Chungmuro and Euljiro. Budget option.
💡 If you want something quieter or cheaper, look further along Line 3 or Line 6 — Beotigogae (버티고개), Dongmyo (동묘앞), or Hyehwa (혜화). All keep the commute short and are popular with students at Dongguk and nearby universities. Hyehwa in particular has the student infrastructure that the immediate Jung-gu area lacks.

Dongguk is one of the few Seoul campuses where you're genuinely living in the center of the city — Myeongdong for dinner, Namsan on your doorstep, and everything on Line 3. The trade is older buildings and higher rent than a comparable room in an outer university district. For students who want to be in Seoul proper rather than adjacent to it, that's a trade worth making.
