Furnishing an Empty Room in Korea: IKEA vs Danggeun Market

Some Korean studios and officetels come “full option” with a fridge, washer, and even a bed frame already built in. Plenty of others come completely empty. If yours is the second kind, you're choosing between buying new or buying secondhand — and in Korea, that mostly means IKEA versus Danggeun Market (당근마켓).

Here's how each actually works, based on current official information — not assumptions.

IKEA Korea: Store Locations

IKEA Korea currently operates full-format stores in Gwangmyeong, Goyang, Giheung (Yongin), and Dongbusan (Busan) — plus, as of April 2025, IKEA Gangdong, the first full IKEA store actually inside Seoul city limits, located in Godeok-dong. If you don't want to travel out to Gyeonggi-do, Gangdong is the one to check first.

Ordering and Delivery

You don't need an IKEA Family membership to buy — non-members can order freely, in-store or online. Delivery pricing is nationwide flat-rate by weight, not distance-based (Jeju is the one exception, priced higher):

• Under 25kg: ₩10,000
• Under 300kg: ₩30,000
• Under 600kg: ₩50,000
• Under 1,000kg: ₩70,000

Regular delivery takes 3–7 days; express delivery (2 days) is available in the Seoul metro area and parts of Busan. Assembly service is separate and optional, starting around ₩30,000 — but it can only be booked together with delivery, not added afterward.

Danggeun Market (당근마켓): How It Works

Danggeun Market is Korea's hyperlocal secondhand marketplace app — browse listings from people near you, chat in-app, and meet up in person to trade.

• A Korean phone number (010) is required to sign up, tied to your mobile carrier account.
• GPS-based neighborhood verification is mandatory: you need to physically be in a neighborhood to verify it before you can trade there (up to 2 neighborhoods).
• An English interface option exists (Settings → Language), but this only translates the app’s own menus — other users’ listings and chat messages are still in Korean. Most foreign users rely on Google Translate or Papago for actual conversations.
• Payment is typically cash or bank transfer in person; there’s no built-in escrow for local trades, so meeting in a public place is the standard advice.

Desks, chairs, bed frames, and mattresses are common finds — and for anyone furnishing a studio or officetel, mini-fridges and compact washing machines also turn up regularly, since outgoing tenants often sell these directly rather than move them.

IKEA vs Danggeun Market: The Trade-offs

• Condition: IKEA is new, flat-pack, and needs assembly (or the ~₩30,000+ assembly fee). Danggeun items are used and usually already assembled.
• Speed: IKEA delivery takes days. Danggeun pickup can happen the same day, since it’s a local meetup.
• Price: IKEA has fixed new-furniture pricing. Danggeun prices are set by individual sellers and are often cheaper, but not standardized.
• Setup requirement: a Korean phone number for Danggeun vs. no phone number needed for IKEA online orders.

A practical split that works for a lot of renters: buy large appliances and furniture secondhand on Danggeun (mini-fridge, washing machine, bed frame), and order smaller essentials new from IKEA if you want guaranteed condition and fast, predictable delivery.

💡 Other secondhand options worth knowing: Joonggonara (중고나라) is Korea's oldest secondhand marketplace with nationwide (shipping-based) reach rather than Danggeun's local-pickup model, and Bungae Jangter (번개장터) leans toward fashion, sneakers, and electronics rather than furniture.
